“WORLD’S BIGGEST TOLKIEN/HOBBIT FAN”… Peter Kenny.

“WORLD’S BIGGEST TOLKIEN/HOBBIT FAN”… Peter Kenny.

What makes the World’s biggest Tolkien/Hobbit fan?

I remember when I was young sitting on the carpet in class as Mr Kenny told the story of “The Hobbit”, showing us pictures and using different voices for the various characters.

A teacher for forty years, Peter Kenny often read “The Hobbit” to his classes during his career and implemented creative writing and reading themes based on Tolkien’s classic children’s story. Former students have attributed their love of reading to Peter’s passion for his favourite story and always speak highly of Mr Kenny and his lessons based on “The Hobbit”.

I am proud to say that I am one such former student.

I recently talked with Peter in conjunction with a University article I am writing about inspirational people. Below is a list of all of Peter’s achievements and activities over the last four years which makes him being worthy as one of the world’s biggest and passionate Tolkien/Hobbit fans.

Peter, who lives in Brisbane, Australia, not only owns one of the finest collections of books and memorabilia but he also writes poems, stories and articles about Middle-earth some of which have been published in overseas and on line books and journals.

I have been a friend of Peter’s for a number of years and have experienced his passion for Tolkien first hand. He truly has a wonderful collection and a visit to his house includes an obligatory tour of his collection which includes interesting information, historical background of Tolkien’s world and history of publications.

Peter retired from teaching at the end of 2009 and has since turned his collecting hobby into a day to day experience. Since 2010 not only has his collection had several significant additions, but our Hobbit, Mr Proudfoot, has endeavoured to learn more about and enjoy all aspects of things associated with Tolkien’s world. In recent years Peter has become an overseas traveller visiting locations, festivals and conventions associated with Tolkien’s world.

Being acknowledged as one of the biggest fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and The Hobbit sits comfortably with our “Hobbit from Down Under”, who is also sometimes called Mr Proudfoot. In my personal opinion it is fair to say any acknowledgement he receives is warranted.
