TOLKIEN READING DAY

THE THEME FOR THIS YEAR IS “HOPE”.

The Brisbane Tolkien Fellowship will be celebrating, Tolkien Reading Day on Saturday, March 22, at The Logan North Library, from 11:00 a.m.

On 25 March fans of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien will join together in a worldwide celebration of the late author’s works for Tolkien Reading Day. The theme this year is ‘hope’ in Tolkien’s works.

Tolkien Reading Day is an annual event, launched by The Tolkien Society in 2003, that takes place on March 25. It has the aim of encouraging the reading of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, and the use of Tolkien’s works in education and library groups. The date of March 25 was chosen in honour of the fall of Sauron, in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The day was originally suggested by columnist Sean Kirst, of the Syracuse, NY Post-Standard newspaper. He has organized Tolkien Reading Days every year since 2008.

Since 2003, fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work have gathered each March to celebrate and share his writing with each other and the public.  Set by the Tolkien Society on March 25 to commemorate the downfall of Sauron in “The Lord of the Rings.”

In Brisbane, the local Tolkien Fellowship has observed Tolkien Reading Day since our formation in 2012. Open to all who appreciate Tolkien’s work, volunteers are asked to sign up to read selections that may range from favourites like “The Hobbit”  to lesser-known pieces like the children’s book “Farmer Giles of Ham.”

The Brisbane Tolkien Fellowship invites you to join in celebrating J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings. The purpose of Tolkien Reading Day is to invite everyone to discover and enjoy the books written by J.R.R. Tolkien through talking about them and activities associated with them. The emphasis is on enjoying the story.

What part of Tolkien’s works will you be reading? Are you returning to an old favourite section, perhaps exploring one of his books you haven’t read before, or introducing a family member or friend to the incredible world of Middle-earth?

Volunteers who would like to sign up to read should visit the Facebook event page
