The Hobbit and Other Notes… 2

Through poverty, abandonment and a range of other causes, many children don’t have the opportunity to be exposed to reading and quality reading material. Proudfoot’s goal is to enhance children’s education through literacy.

Hobbit Notes:

The Shire: By 1630 TA almost all of the Hobbits of Middle-earth could be found in the Shire, which they divided into four Farthings and there were villages and folklands throughout.

Gandalf Reveals a Map and a Key:

While the dwarves were singing, Bilbo thought of precious things, great mountains, forests and caves. And he thought of wearing a sword instead of a walking stick.

“The stars were out in a dark sky above the trees. He thought of the jewels of the dwarves shining in dark caverns. Suddenly in the wood beyond The Water a flame leapt up – probably somebody lighting a wood-fire – and he thought of plundering dragons settling on his quiet Hill and kindling it all to flames. He shuddered; and very quickly he was plain Mr Baggins of Bag-End, Under-Hill, again.”

After the singing and merriment, Gandalf showed a map of The Lonely Mountain which he spread out on the table before them. The map had been made by Thror, Thorin’s grandfather and it was a plan of the mountain. On the map was marked a red dragon and there were runes written on it. On the west side was a rune and a hand pointing to it which indicated a hidden passage into the mountain.

“Five feet high the door and three may walk abreast,” say the runes. Gandalf went on to add that there was a closed door to the passage and it was made to look exactly like the mountainside.

Next Gandalf produced a key which went with the map. He handed the key to Thorin who fastened it on a chain and placed it around his neck.

They discussed plans for their journey to The Lonely Mountain and Thorin related tales of the Dwarf Kingdom and how Smaug came and destroyed their kingdom.

Finally they all decided it was time to sleep and gave Bilbo their breakfast orders. Bilbo decided he would not get up and cook all their breakfasts and that he was not going on any journey in the morning.
