Members of The Brisbane Tolkien Fellowship are gaining a reputation for their magnificent costumes that are worn for various events in and around Brisbane.

Probably the most outstanding costume is The Warg created by Kelly Hampson and Brendon Ockers. The Warg was inspired by “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. At events it is worn by one of its co-creators, Brendon, and it is a fully functional walking creature.

Whether you are a fan of the Hobbit movies and Tolkien’s World or not, you would find this creature costume an amazing creative work.

The Warg has made appearances at Supanova, An Evening in Middle-earth, Sci-Fi Fantasy month at Logan North Library and the Queensland Premiere of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

The Warg will make other appearances around Brisbane, during the coming year, so keep your eyes open and you may see this awesome creature walking towards you.

It all started on December 18th, 2012, sitting in the movie theatre watching ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ for the first time. As soon as the newly designed wargs hit the screen we knew we wanted to make one. Combining many years of costume building experience we set about bringing the beast to life.

The design phase alone took a number of weeks with many nights spent pouring over whatever reference pictures we could find. We wanted the costume to be as realistic and eye catching as possible while still being functional and developed a number of techniques to achieve this including the jointed arm extensions and articulated tail.

Construction took about 2 full weeks of work spread out over a couple of months and many long sleepless nights of sewing, sculpting and carving. We used a range of materials including foam, PVC piping, faux fur, 4 inch replica grizzly bear claws, styrofoam, various plastics and resins and rubber.

Although it is still very much a work in progress the Warg received an amazing response at its big debut at Supanova on the Gold Coast last year (2013) causing several traffic jams in the aisles with people wanting photos. It even received compliments from the Weta crew. We have some big plans for adding more specialised features to it in the future.
