BTF Meeting Minutes: May 20th 2012

Brisbane Tolkien Fellowship Meeting, May 20th.

Greetings to All. We had a very pleasent meeting of the Fellowship on Sunday, at Coffee Club Milton. An enjoyable couple of hours were spent talking about all things Hobbit, sharing the latest Tolkien news, our experiences, our travels, and lunching on the Coffee Club’s delicious fare. Even a certain Hobbit was satisfied!

A number of things of note occurred. It was moved that our group’s name be changed to ‘ Brisbane  Tolkien Fellowship’ (the same as our Banner), and this was agreed on unanimously by all in attendance. It was also agreed to affiliate our Fellowship with The Tolkien Society in England.

The Fortinbras Proudfoot Esq Foundation will be incorporated as the Charity arm of the group to raise funds for Children’s Literacy. A few ideas were discussed about possible ways to raise funds for the cause and members were asked to think of ideas for future activities.

Peter told us about his presentations at Libraries around town and his upcoming journey to Europe where he will be presenting at various events while there. Events he will be attending include: The Return of the Ring in England; The Austrian Tolkien Society’s 10th Anniversary; The Hobbit 75th Anniversary in The Netherlands and Ring*Con in Germany. It is wonderful that one of our members will be representing us at these prestigious events.

Also, Peter told us about the Miniature Hobbit Hole which is currently on display at the Chermside Library. It has now been displayed at four Libraries around Brisbane as well as Supanova in April at the Gold Coast. The Hobbit Hole will also be displayed at Supanova Brisbane in November and Brisbane Tolkien Fellowship will be in attendance to assist.

We are definitely attending the Logan North Sci-Fi and Fantasy Fair this year in August where we will have a month long display and set up an information table at the Celebration Fair day which concludes the Sci Fi Fantasy Month.

Other members at the meeting shared their Tolkien experiences with the group.

Kaja discussed her project to create a calendar set to Middle-earth time. Kaja also had a cool t-shirt with Tengwar script on it that she had printed herself. The script read ‘wild’ and on the back of the shirt was a lion.

Mace told us that his parents were big Lord of the Rings fans back when the book was considered as ‘The Hippie Bible’. His parents gave him the middle name Aragorn.

When he was young they had a cat named Bilbo and the neighbours had a dog named Gimli. Mace was born in New Zealand, so people there were fans long before the movies were ever made.

He also discussed how he would like to do an exhibition of his Tolkien Art.

Scott brought with him a golden ring and an Elven Fellowship Brooch to show us, both of which he had made. He described how he had made them and Mace who also makes brooches showed a lot of interest. Peter suggested they should set up a business.

We then discussed the idea of making badges with Lord of the Rings quotes on them to be a way of raising money at November’s Supanova.

Trevor showed us a photo album of his and Chris’s recent travels to New Zealand where they visited the Hobbiton Movie Location and other locations around Wellington… Wonderful Photos. He also showed photos from ‘Wings Over Wanaka’, including planes owned by Peter Jackson, who is an aviation enthusiast.
